Take a forty-five-minute drive from the heart of Moab, Utah and you’ll find the most gorgeous sunset spot – Dead Horse Point State Park. Tim and I were so grateful to be able to experience the sunset here in Utah thanks to a wonderful recommendation from Mallory after our hike earlier in the week to Delicate Arch in Arches National Park.
Getting to Dead Horse Point State Park
This park has to be one of my all-time favorite sunset spots now. I highly suggest you make the drive to this lookout when visiting Moab. Firstly, there is a map below showing the drive from Moab to the final lookout point.
Next, you’ll need to be aware of park fees. The park has a day-use fee pass, which is usable for three consecutive days. It runs about $20 for a regular vehicle ( 8 people max ). All the roads are paved to this overlook parking area. From the parking area, it is only a 200-foot walk one way to get to the viewpoint seen below.
Located at the end of the road is a very large covered shelter and lookout platform. There are also restrooms at this parking area.
Moreover, many people like to also take the East and West Rim trails that connect to this point for a less crowded spot. You can get a map from the visitor center when arriving to check out the 7 miles of surrounding trails in the area. Most parks in Moab unfortunately don’t allow dogs. However, this park does allow dogs on hiking trails as long as they are on a leash.
Overlook the Colorado River
We visited Moab in April and the weather was beautiful during the day. Early mornings and evenings do however get cold, so bring warm clothes if visiting in the winter or early spring.
Note: Drones are not allowed in the park between March and October. Special permits can be purchased. Learn more here.
Packing List
Tim and I pack up the truck for the day and always bring our standard day packs with us. Below are a few of the items I recommend bringing.
- Sweatshirt – I live in my Volcom Hoodie on trips like this!
- Beanie – Because who wants to actually wash their hair on road trips
- Daypack – I always bring my pack with a small hydroflask on short hikes.
- Boots – If you take the other dirt trails, bring shoes with grip!
- Can’t forget a good camera! Check out my gear post here.
Above all, Dead Horse Point State Park in Moab, Utah was a perfect place to end to our busy day of hiking. After that, we couldn’t wait to wake up and hike to the next breathtaking spot, Grandstaff Trail to Morning Glory Arch.
