Alaska is captivating – a place filled with limitless fjords and waterways – truly an outdoor enthusiast’s dream destination and a great place to take a float plane tour in Ketchikan. With its diverse landscapes combining vast mountains, seas and alpine lakes, this area has a reputation of being one of the most popular tourist spots for visitors arriving by plane or ship.
This trip would be my first to Alaska, and while visiting on business for a hospitality project, it seemed fitting to begin the trip by experiencing this beautiful property and surrounding area by air.
Float Plane Tour
Misty Fjords National Monument
Our home away from home for the week, Salmon Falls Fishing Resort, recommended using Carlin Air to set up our flight so that the crew could get their first aerial look at the resort and surrounding scenery.
The film crew and I, along with our VP of Marketing & Media, were able to be picked up right at the resort’s dock which was extremely convenient!
The unique De Havilland Beaver float plane fit all 6 of us, including the pilot, comfortably. Communication with the pilot was also quite easy since we were all given voice-activated headsets.
Our pilot had a wealth of knowledge about the area and was spectacular at spotting the wildlife high up in the mountains as we headed deep into the Misty Fjords.
Misty Fjords National Monument spans a jaw-dropping 2.2 million acres and is home to an abundance of wildlife. We were able to see bears and mountain goats from the air and were told that there are also moose, wolves, otters, sea lions, and killer whales commonly seen in these areas.
Float Plane Tour – Views from the sky
We did get a chance to see whales while on our Salmon Falls Fishing Resort Salmon Fishing day excursion. Read more about that blog post here.
Looking through the viewfinder of my camera, the scale of the sheer rock faces felt unreal – I could see why they call it “the Yosemite of the North”.
Float Plane Tour – Landing in the Lakes
A couple of my favorite Alaska outfit accessories:
- Shown in the photo above are my Sorel Boots
- Black REI Jacket from my fishing trip
- My orange beanie from Amazon!
Each Carlin Air tour offers a remote alpine lake stop, high in the mountains of “The Mistys”, and allows the visitors to get out and experience this section of the remote National Monument from the ground. We started our descent and could not wait to soak in all the grandeur of the clear blue lake up close!
It was a calming feeling, with a crisp air blowing through the pines and the subtle sound of the water rolling up to the shoreline.
I made to sure take in all of its beauty before returning to photographing all the inspirational shots that we would later share with our future hospitality visitors. Can you spot the plane landing on the lake below?

I could not be more grateful for the opportunity to experience such a stunning location. With the help of our talented team of photographers, videographers, script writers and directors, this trip was a huge success in documenting this beautiful resort and the surrounding areas.
Capturing The Mistys during this hour and a half flightseeing tour will forever be one of the most memorable experiences I have had to date. If you happen to be visiting Ketchikan Alaska or staying at the Salmon Falls Fishing Resort with your family, I would highly recommended booking a float plan tour to take in all that this gorgeous landscape has to offer from the air.
