Thousands of photos of this scenic location can be found online but did you know only 20 people per day are able to visit? This is due to strict permit process in place by BLM ( Bureau of Land Management ) to protect this beautiful place. Ten permits are issues via their online lottery and the other ten are walk-up permits at the Kanab Visitors Center which you apply for the day prior to the hike.
Getting Permits
walk up method
On our way up to Zion National Park from Phoenix, my boyfriend and I decided to try our luck with the walk-up process. When the center is open 7 day’s a week ( Mid-March to Mid-November ), arrive early between 8:30am-9 to join the other hopeful hikers and photographers. There were about 80 people that November morning wanting to get a permit!
Remember when I said only 10 permits a day are issued? That means if one number is pulled and that person has a group of 4 then only 6 permits remain.
The hike to
the wave
Luckily they called my number last and that meant we were going to the wave the next morning! We already had our .GPX file downloaded into the Garmin inReach GPS as backup and the center gives you a map and explains the landmarks on how to get there.
NOTE: The trail is partially over solid rock with no defined trail.
We researched this trail on All Trails in addition to other sites prior to the trip so we could be prepared. The Kanab Visitors center BLM site will give you all the info you need prior to heading out as well.
Hope you all get lucky and get a permit to visit this spectacular, one-of-a-kind location!
